If you have one other monster group with you, the chances are actually better than 50% that he'll fight that other monster group instead. So hopefully you can go a round, then run away and be ok.

The other option, of course, is to restart the level and space out the checkpoints more evenly. That'll give you the luxury of waiting to the end of the level to confront the king. I realize that's not necessarily the most attractive of options.
