It really takes a flow chart to do this properly. If you write down each location in a column on a piece of paper, then next to it write down where each movement option puts you, you can ultimately figure out which options in which locations you haven't yet tried.

The game takes five moves to solve, starting from the very beginning. If memory serves, you don't go by either the elves or the cabin, so if you hit one of those, you can write off whichever options took you there.
