Actually, the choice of color is very important. My son-in-law says red gets noticed and is therefore more likely to win in competition.
I've had always been a stickler for getting the color as close to the original hue as possible. That's why my '47 Cushman (two 1st place trophies) was painted with tractor paint that is tough, but doesn't shine like modern paint. But i've change my thinking on that. The paint on my '61 Cushman was a kind of brick red which doesn't do much for me, so I painted it bright yellow and that's not a stock color. It was never intended to be a show scooter, but it has won two seconds.

My present project, a 1953 Allstate, built by Cushman for Sears, will have a modern "wet look" hurt-your-eyes red paint job. This is a very stylish, slightly rare, art deco scooter which I hope will win s few competitions. The original color was red. It had two little chrome trim pieces on the sides that are going to cost me sixty bucks to replace.

My Vespa is green and still has it's original paint in fairly good condition, but it's only 25 years old.

I can't rule out blue because it was a stock Cushman color. It looks good on a Cushman Eagle. I don't have one of those yet.

Now about those flames. Yes, I've seen them on scooters. I've also seen a 3-wheeled Cushman Truckster done up like a wrecker, a Coke Cushman, a police Cushman and even a trailer truck Cushman.
I have a model 724 Cushman which was built in 1957 and it has long flowing flat sides like the cars of the era. I have condidered painting it school-bus yellow, with lots of lights and a little swing-out stop sign. It just seems like the thing for a retired teacher to do.
