MV Final Level (serious spoilers)

OK, I finally need a hint, I think. I'm on the final level and I have 8 reds left: 4 in the NW area (for which I do have the stone of passage), 2 in the SE area (with the seal on it), and 2 in the center (also unavailable). In addition, there is a pool that I can't get to due to a "deathly chill".

I have tried any number of times to defeat the reds in the "tunnel rock" area, but even if I take my strongest three parties (a leviathan + 2 others), I get shredded. So I have the feeling that I need to do something else first and get a larger, stronger party in there.

The death key doesn't seem to work to get into the pool area; neither does the Gelatinous Cube trick. I can't figure out any way into there or the sealed SE area; it seems like if I've missed something, it has to do with entry into one of those two areas, since the center area must be the final battle's location.

If anyone could give me a nudge as to what I need to do next, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
