Well I'm not sure now. My recollection is that there was always a Sphinx in the study - I don't recall it being in a case. I got all the bits to make the machine work and then I heard a rumble. When I then went back to the study and sat down at Lord Brackly's desk then the secret passage opened. Maybe there's a glitch in the game or maybe I did the combination lock in my sleep and so don't remember it.

Maybe I should play the game again to check...
