help! the mystery of brackly hall

I've already put the sphinx in its proper place in the study and put the cog where it belongs, but I can't for the life of me figure out where the key to the machine is! I think that it might be the item in the bird's nest in the graveyard, but even though I've already gotten into the graveyard, it tells me that I can't climb the tree because it's too high. I have acorns, iron key, tourist brochure, birdseed,lavender, silver key, stone head, map of brackly hall, spade, pocket knife, translated papyrus, and map of the maze. What do I need to do?
