The beginning of level 9 is rough, but it's more a matter of navigating that first room than fighting. Before engaging in combat, make sure you've found all the resources available to you for fighting the first battle.

You shouldn't need to backtrack to level 10 to survive well on level 9, even if you missed some pools or potions. Which is fortunate, because you can't.
