Murkon's Vengance, level 2 (spoilers, natch)

I'm serious about the spoilers. Don't read this if you aren't on level two yet.

I'm utterly flummoxed on level 2. I've scavenged both the level's keys, but I still cannot pass the life-repulsing field. All the level's player parties are either past that field guarding town or past the warning sign. Since I have to pass through an unsummoning field to get to the latter set, the player parties ream me whenever I attack. Even when I try hit-and-run, I'm killed nine times out of ten while I flee. I know it's not a problem of stats; freeborns haven't dropped any potions in a good while, and I've kitted myself out entirely in items of classiness and the best sword. What do I need to do to crack this level? Any hints toward passing the field or defeating the parties single-handedly (or whether that's not necessary) would be greatly appreciated.
