Uh, no no no no. This is totally the hard way.

piff -- the secret is to *not* engage enemies after the first guard. There's a 'Hints' link right when you enter the game. The first question will provide the answers you are seeking. It's not so tough when you stop thinking you have to win battles in which you are hopelessly outmatched.
