Actually, I was under the impression that those are more of guidelines than hard-and-fast rules--especially the one about not ending sentences with prepositions. I could be wrong, though.

Ah! I just found a Wikipedia entry that explains it all (with prepositions, at least). Check out the link and read under "English prescriptive guidelines". Interesting stuff.
