"Airplane" implies, to me at least "Something in the air". "Aeroplane", on the other hand connects to aeronatic engineering, and the aerospace industry. I think the American version tends towards a simple literalism that lacks a certain poetry. I've noticed the same thing with "autumn" (the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness) and "fall" (when the leaves fall off the trees.

No doubt there are counterexamples where the American version of word has more poetry, but none come to mind.
