Ok....Fantasy quest help....sigh...

I always hate to ask for hints, but I've been going around in circles. I fed a fish to the gnome in the forest, but he just ate it and didn't do anything....and now I cannot catch another fish. I cannot figure out how to get into the tower or the southern fortress either. Could someone help me with just one of these? Not a spoiler please, just a hint. Thank you.
