Question about Murkon's Refuge

I'm a bit confused about how the logistics of the battle system
work.

For instance, I entered into a battle with 4 minotaurs and 7
forest wights. I had my sorcerer cast fireblaze on the forest
wights, and everyone else attack the minotaurs, and the
resulting text was as follows:

Connell casts FIREBLAZE.
A Forest Wight is burnt for 19 damage! The Forest Wight dies!
A Forest Wight is burnt for 11 damage! The Forest Wight dies!
A Forest Wight is torched for 15 damage!
A Forest Wight is torched for 20 damage! The Forest Wight dies!
A Forest Wight is fried for 20 damage!
A Forest Wight is sizzled for 12 damage!
A Forest Wight is sizzled for 6 damage!

How is it, that one Forest Wight can take 19 damage, and die,
and another take 20 and die, and another take 20 as well, and
not die?

Just curious. Does the descriptive word (fried sizzled torched)
make a difference, or is just there to provide difference?
