I think the idea behind sequels originally went something like this:
I really liked that movie and I wonder what else went on in the lives of those characters. Why doesn't somebody make another movie telling about what happened to them at a later time?
Or:
That character certainly was clever the way he solved all of those problems. I wonder how he would handle other problems?
However:
Now it seems to be. Hot dog! We made a bunch of money on that one. Why don't we make another one using the same formula and make another bunch of money?
Or:
We got rich using those actors in that movie. Why don't we add a Roman numeral to the title, shoot some more of the same, and get rich all over again. Howard
