Another observation - one that I didn't think of at the time:

Even during periods when the Forum has not been "dead", I have had the feeling that people would not really respond to posts as much or at all if they did not pose some sort of question. Posts simply stating an event that happened in someone's life, for example, would be read and enjoyed but not replied to, as if nobody knew what to say unless they had something very concrete to promp them.
