umm...outlaws trapdoor spoilers welcome

So I'm in the study and I don't know how to make the trapdoor work. All I get is a square around my feet. I've heard something need to be done on the third floor, but I can't get into the far south door. Something is moving inside. does this have anything to do with the grinding below me? What do I have to do to get the trapdoor to open?Help someone. please!
