Early years: Trapped in Castle Bombadier 2

I have:
gold key
pick

I've been wandering around for ages, and though I mapped the castle, I tumbled down a certain pit a zillion times and ran away from the guard even more often.
The doors won't open, no matter how often I try it.
The whole thing is a marshmallow free zone and walking up stairs doesn't help either.

Please help me if you can.
