That's kind of like saying, "Could someone please tell me the answer, but don't tell me the answer." Like it or not, if you can't find something, mapping is precisely what to do to solve your problem. In Murkon's Refuge, pretty much all problems of this nature are trivially solved by making sure you've been everywhere you can possibly be.
The good news is that the first level is toughest one to explore fully. Why? Because after you get past the first level, you'll have levelled up your spellcasters and gained a lot of navigational spells that make mapping much much easier and, for many levels, unnecessary.
