My last big event was getting the dynamite, but it just tells me I have nothing to light it with. Do I need to find matches e.t.c. If so, any hints as to where they may be?

You're on the right track if you hacked down the stalagmites; just hold on to the dynamite for now. I don't recall where the matches are, but you're on the verge of accessing a very important (and very annoying) section of the game.

Climb back up the pipe to get back to the first level, and take the cart down to that area again - but this time, you must take note that the cart is STILL MOVING. In fact, the track continues further on, and if you hurry, you can probably still catch the cart again before it's gone. (This, of course, requires a shortcut - but hey, didn't you just make one by hacking down those stalagmites?)
