The process will be considerably faster if you submit your site to the search engines manually, rather than waiting for them to pick it up automatically.

For Google, visit the link below, fill out the very brief form, and hit the "Add URL" button. Note that it may *still* be quite a while before your site shows up in Google, but at least this way they know about it.

Most other search engines have a similar way of submitting your site to them. Sometimes the URL submission page is harder to find than at others. Most of them are free, but I notice that Dogpile's submission page costs a bit for a guaranteed listing. Not worth it.
