You know when you try to go down the stairs and you can't do so without *proper authorization*? That is precisely what you need to find; you'll know it when you see it.

And try looking in a place where there's a whole bunch of monsters.

By the way, it helps if you have a spellcaster who can cast lights spells, even if it's just the Candle spell. If you don't have any spellcasters, you should buy a source of light at the shop (if you have enough gold, of course). Either way you'll have an illustration that will help with mapping (it's helped me so much that I have never mapped the last level), and with finding things.
