REC. CENTER

I was driving along the Tellico Parkway, which is the main road through exclusive Tellico Village, when I spotted a sign that read REC. CENTER. It had an arrow pointing down a side road to the right. That got my twisted mind to working. What does the "rec." stand for? Recreation, as in Recreation Center, came to mind. Or was it directing me to the Recycling Center? Could there be a Recruiting Center down that road? Or maybe a Reclaimation Center? I didn't make the turn, but maybe next time.

There are a great many signs like that. When I see one of those signs that says "All trucks stop," or "Trucks use two right lanes," I always wonder if my small pickup truck is included. Even the "two right lanes" part confuses me. Are trucks required to use both of the two right lanes or do they have a choice?

"No right turns," is another one. I hate making wrong turns, but I suppose I could just keep going straight.

"School Zone, 15 mph, When Flashing" might be a problem for some people, but I'm not a flasher.

Near Chattanooga, on I-75, there is a construction zone with a 45 mph speed limit. Then you come upon a sign that reads, "Reduced Speed Ahead." About a hundred yards after that, the posted speed limit becomes 55 mph. Reduced? It doesn't matter. Most of the traffic is moving in excess of 70 anyway.

And then there is the "Motor Driven Cycles Prohibited" sign that is often posted at freeway entrances. Hello!? Isn't a Harley Hog a motor driven cycle?. How about a Honda Goldwing? You see plenty of them on those freeways. Maybe it means mopeds, or Whizzers, or electric cycles. But shouldn't it say so?

Going into National Parks, you may see signs prohibiting "commercial vehicles." If you are driving a rented car, think about it.
