Camelot's Curse...Now what?

You are standing in a major intersection. Merlin appears and informs you that to solve the quest, something in this area must be encountered. Merlin disappears before you can say a word.

Go north.
Go east.
Go south.
Go west.

You're Carrying:

A Knight's Head
A Pail
A Bronze Key

A Bamboo Stick
A Length of Rope
A Purple Gem

Ugh! I have no clue what to do from here...I've been through the castle, gotten rid of the guards...I'm sure I'm missing something so obvious.
