Mustache and Soot in Outlaws

Hi, I have the following inventory. My problem is that even though I have talked to the guard, and tried to take his mustache with the rapier, I cannot get it. I've looked closely at him and I've thought, and thought, but not getting anywhere.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, I have no soot... is this going to be problem for me?
