I think a hero must have an "object" to be heroic to or for...whether the object is another person or persons, or whether it's an abstract concept/belief/cause--whatever--I don't think heroism is a solo experience, exactly.

I also think that the heroic act must involve some risk or sacrifice (or at very least some concentated effort) by the hero to qualify as heroic. If it's too easy...it's just not heroic.
