stuck very early in FQ

ok I have the following items:
sack
silver coin
carrot
rope
branch
silver key
sword
shovel
hammer
nails
torn shirt
arrow

ok, I am very early into this game and I am already stuck. I can't seem to go to some of these places on the map.
I have done the following things:
swam in the ocean
went to the hut
talked to indian, couldnt help him
talked to soothsayer, she couldnt help me
tried to talk to guy that would not talk
went in the cave...many, many times. and ended up back in the ocean each time.
tried to bash the wall with my shovel
went in the farm, and garage
went in the garden
I cant seem to get anywhere else
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I keep going back and forth and I am not getting anywhere :(
