As far as I know, there is only one location from which you can go to get to the spinning stone, and only one direction works from that location. I seem to remember there were maybe three or four directional choices and three other choices at the location of the spinning stone.
Try mapping it. I know it sounds impossible, but there are only about fifteen locations in the game. You can fit the whole game in a flowchart on a single sheet of loose leaf paper. It really help to know exactly which choices you've picked from which locations, so that you can systematically eliminate all of them until you come to the right one.
