Keep in mind that the only distance that matters is the length of the cable that runs from the Central Office (CO) to their home. The CO is that big metal box I mentioned...I knew there was a proper name for it but I couldn't remember what it was until today.
I lived right smack in the middle of a large city and I couldn't get DSL for a long time because I was a few hundred yards over the limit. The CO was maybe 500 feet from my house, but because the cables from the CO to my house were laid in some weird fashion, I was too far.
