If you read Parade magazine, don't overlook the story about Port Chicago, where ammunition ships were loaded for the Pacific theater during WWII. It tells about the big blast that can happen any time at such a facility, and the unfair treatment of the US Navy personel who did the actual loading. It's just another disgusting chapter in US history. This is a great country, but we will never be perfect. I'm not sure all of the errors made back in 1944 have been corrected, but maybe someday.
