Couple things:

1) You can't map the desert, nor do you need to. Your guide insists that you should NOT go in a certain direction (I believe he tells you not to go west). Take his advice to heart and you'll find something.
2) Once you do find that something, what is the absolute stupidest thing you could possibly do with your canteen in the middle of a desert?
