I agree; I wouldn't consider making a purchase that big without a receipt. But I suspect any self-respecting jeweler wouldn't think not to give you one. Of course, if you finance it, you'll have paperwork already.
What constitutes proof of engagement? I don't know. I guess a receipt for the engagement ring is certainly sufficient, and feel free to blot out the price, as that's surely none of my business.
