Speaking of moonshine; When I was about 12, I was hiking with two friends in the mountains near Hazard, Kentucky. We came upon a log house in a clearing. It was about five acres and there was no garden, no shed, no road, nothing but a pump in the back yard and a footpath that came out of the woods on the lower side. We decided to go down and see if we could get some water. We had just stepped out into the open when somebody stuck a shotgun out of a window and fired a shot into the ground. We left.

Later, we found out that there was a still there, and that the shotgun was sort of a standard warning to stay away. If a moonshiner was open for business, there would be a bright porchlight burning day and night. At this house it would have been a lantern, because there was no electric line there.
