> I was wandering through the book section at Sam's Club today and a good book title just hit me out of the blue: "The Intellectual's Guide to Acting Like a Dummy." I suppose it would be a counter attack on all of those authors who write "for dummies" books. But it might be a useful book. Sometimes even an intellectual needs to play dumb, dumb down, or just act like a dummy. Since intellectuals write books for dummies, I guess it's OK for a dummy to write one for intellectuals. I'll call my publisher and try to see if I can get an advance. > Howard
This is a PS to that last post. Back in my college days when I worked at the newspaper, it was my job to write those little one and two column headlines for stories on the inside pages. The editor, sports editor and society editor wrote the heads for their pages, but those other inside pages were mine.
For practice, I used to think up headlines for which the story had not yet been written. I would file them away among the cobwebs of my brain in case I ever needed them. For example: "Dog Rescues Cat from Rooftop" Now think about that for a minute. Under what circumstances would a dog go up on a roof to rescue a mortal enemy like a cat? It would be a good story.
Or "Ladder Leaves Burgler Hanging" Maybe he was still clinging to a second story window sill when the cops got there. We'll never know.
How about this one. "Check Deposited; Bank Bounces" How big would that check have to be?
"Earthquake Foils Jail Break" A California story, maybe?
"Clerk Injured by Falling Prices" Maybe a large box of price tags on a tall shelf? Naaaaaaw.
"Sandman Wakes Bugler" OK, just suppose a dump truck driver was making an early morning delivery to an Army post. Why would that be newsworthy?
"Two Injured in Shopping Cart Collision" On aisle four, or out in the parking lot?
So if you wondered how I was able to come up with that brilliant book title, it's because I have had practice. Howard
