stuck early in outlaws (SPOILERS)

i'm stuck (what i think is) fairly early in outlaws. i'm wandering around looking for a puzzle to solve.

so far, i've cooked some chili, broken up the card game, met my fellow boarders (and solved a problem for one), thrown a shoe, met some indians, met a monkey, moved a dog, played the piano, and sold a gun.

now i'm wandering from town to town trying to find some sort of hook to grab onto. what should i do/try to do next?
