A dollar short in Outlaws.

I find myself with only 75% of the price of the canteen. I have escaped a rather hot spot and gotten the extra money from that, so I need to find some other way of making a profit. I have seen several mentions of fighting off Indians; am I doing something wrong if I haven't met any Indians yet?
