Sadness for the death of famous trees

Why do people have to be, well, people? Here in Auckland one of our best-known and loved landmarks is One Tree Hill, a volcanic cone topped by a monument and a single, beautifully angled pine tree. The pine tree has been there for probably 100 years or so, since it replaced a previous one that I think died of natural causes, and the one before that was a sacred totara tree that was there long before European colonisation.
Now we have progressed to the time of chainsaws and random lunatics.
