I'm currently re-reading "Brave New World" (written in 1932) and the concept is explored there also. Definitely not as a joke, though... it's interesting how the book presents a scent machine as one of a means of social manipulation. Sounds far-fetched until you realize IRL, it is already put in practice, in small ways--casinos, for example, pumping in peppermint or citrus scent to help their customers feel more alert and less fatigued (and therefore more likely to stay at the slots/tables longer).
