Game of Ages kitchen help!

Okay, I know I need to do something in the kitchen so
that i can get the painting I need. I figured out how to
get into the kitchen, but I can't seem to do anything
except poke around and stoke the fire. Am I missing
something I need before I do this? My inventory is:

17 Bronze Coins
/ Guard's Sword
/ Torch
/ Clear Focus Stone
/ Magnifying Glass
9 Red Gemstones
/ Stone of Strengthening
/ Wire Clippers
/ Crate
1 Black Gemstone
/ Food Rations
/ Key of Opening
/ Hammer
6 Apples
/ Tinderbox
/ Portrait
/ Map
