My adventures with horses wouldn't fill a page, but I can't resist mentioning a few.
When I was a tot, my family toured Calumet Farm, which I have probably misspelled. It was the home of Man O'War, the famous race horse. I got to pat him on the nose. He was friendly.
In Nashville during the early 50's I went with some high school friends to Percy Warner Park a few miles west of town to see the steeplechase. It appeared to be some kind of horse race, but it was rather slow and the horses kept falling down. After that, I stuck to car races.
My grandfather had a Palomino named John. He weighed about a ton and looked like a photograph waiting to be taken. He always knew when a storm was coming and would run back and forth at high speed for while before heading for the barn.
The only time I ever wish I had a horse is after I visit the wagon, carriage, and buggy shop at Dollywood. I would like to see them in motion, but they just sit there like a beautiful car with no engine. Howard
