I think the point behind NaNoWriMo is the same point behind 24 Hour RPG -- to provide a starting point for a greater, finished work.
Although NaNoWriMo doesn't say that it was inspired by the same source, it's got a lot in common with the 24 Hour RPG challenge (as well as the 24 Hour Play, 24 Hour Animation, and 48 Hour Movie challenges). All these X-hour events sprung from the same source, Scott McCloud's 24 Hour Comic.
Right now, I want to try the RPG challenge. I'll be taking part in the 24 Hour Comic sometime in the spring, but that RPG one sounds so interesting.
