When he staggers back, I'm usually empty handed. So I've alternated between picking up the knife & spray.

I pick up the spray he comes towards me, I spray him, he blocks, goes off balance and I automatically have the knife.

I spray him when i have the knife and he knocks the bottle out of my hands.

I try to knife him with the spray and he knocks the knife out of my hands.

When I'm weaponless, I have to pick something up, right?

The only different action he does is wipes his brow. I never notice him lunging. When I do try to step back he slams me into the wall and it's lights out.

This is why I hate fighting games. Spoilers are very welcomed at this point.
