Is it late to begin construction on an Ark? That confounded hurricane is just a big sloppy low pressure area now, but it seems to be sitting over our house. We have had 24 hours of rain, most of it bibical proportions, and they are saying that it will do another 24 hours at least.
Our elevation here is about 960 feet and the Tennessee River is normally about 700 and something, so we are not in a flood zone. The land behind the house drops off into a hollow and we have pretty good drainage, but things are beginning to smell like a jungle out there.
We got a little wind yesterday and sticks, leaves, acorns, and hickory nuts are all over the yard. That dead black gum tree is still standing, and since it leans away from the house, it isn't a problem. Maybe it will wait for those cool sunny days in October when using a chainsaw is less of a problem.
Within the next few days, mushrooms will pop up all over the yard, but they are good for the compost pile.
Because of the rain, I didn't get any exercise yesterday, and my blood sugar was up this morning. Maybe I need to go to the Wal-mart and walk a little. Or a lot.
If this storm was Ivan the terrible, will the next one be Mean Jeanne? Or Meanie Jeanne, depending on how you pronounce Jeanne.
I guess it is a buyer's market in Florida. Flooded land sells cheap. You can probably get a fixer upper house for a song. Soaked cars and battered boats will be a dime a dozen, and a nice room on the beach should be at an all-time low. Just be sure you take your own water and gasoline. Howard
