It's a big world where lots of horrible things happen, but made smaller by technology so that we know of it immediately. Obviously.

But we only take it in our stride because it's not happening to us. See those poor parents in Russia, or any grieving relative in Iraq, or Palestine, or Sudan, or.... We see so much tragedy on TV we become a little inured to it.
If tragedy strikes us as individuals I suspect we believe nobody can understand how it really feels. Perhaps thre is a danger in TV; maybe we lose the ability to empathise.
