the time is ripe

Personally, I think the time is ripe for somebody to push for a descent rail system in the USA. My daughter went to Los Angeles via Amtrak and the train arrived in LA 14 hours late. The air conditioner didn't work right and propane gas leaked in and made a bunch of people sick.

I get out on the Interstate and even stretches 50 miles from the nearest city have heavy traffic. Half the vehicles on the road are trailer trucks that can legally weight 40 tons. I don't know about the truck drivers, but half of the ones in private vehicle are on the phone. You can't go anywhere without traffic backing up so bad you either stop or just creap along in low gear.

Did I mention the price of gas?

If we had a rail system like the one we had 50 or 60 years ago, we could reduce traffic, save money, talk on the phone when we wanted to, and then arrive somewhere not completely frazzled.

The tracks are still there, and there are better, cleaner, locomotives available. We might need a few new stations and some new rolling stock for passengers, but it would be relatively simple to put Americans back on rails.

When traffic was light and gas was cheap, people wouldn't have gone for it, but things are getting worse fast, and I think the time is ripe.
