FQ2: Platforms and ladder

So I got through the rusty gate to the rust-colored platform, but nothing happens when I step on the platform. I can't go across the bog, so basically I can't do anything past the gate. Though I've played through this game once before, it's been a long time, and now I can't remember how to proceed.

Also, it seems as though when I played before I broke my Huge Ladder and the pieces came in handy, but now I can't remember what I did to break it. Any ideas?

Crown of Destiny
Bottle Opener
Pliers

Sack
Float Ring

Iron Support
Rusty Key
