A couple things you can do at this point:
1. You can catch something by the river, with a little more patience.
2. There's a tree you haven't yet tried to climb somewhere near the starting location of the game. You'll find an item that will let you get further in the forest.

Also, in the future, let people know what items you have and what you've been able to do, or they won't be able to help. Not everyone has a crystal ball!
