I flipped on the TV and there were Simon and Garfunkle, just finishing up "Mrs. Robinson." I had forgotten how good they sounded. Then they ran a clip of S&G in their younger days. They were singing with Andy Williams and he had managed to blend in perfectly with their sound. The good news is that they were promoting an upcoming tour. There will be people hearing that sound for the first time.
A couple of hours later, I picked up a copy of Smithsonian Magazine and there was an article about Artie Shaw. I remember when Shaw's clarinet was the identifying sound of the big band era. Shaw is 93 now and claims he hasn't played the clarinet in 50 years. What a pity. Thank goodness Simon and Garfunkle are still sharing their sound with the world.
I wish them well as they begin that new tour. Howard
