i'm as stuck as a bug in syrup.

here is my inventory:

19 bronze coins
10 red gemstones
6 apples
guards sword
stone of strengthening
food rations
tinder box
torch
key of opening
self portrait
clear focus stone
hammer
rusty nail
map

i just got done with the secret area (fun!). i went around in Lygamllyn (whatever) i visted the gwuills (who don't have much to say) i visted the blacksmith (who could only make me a sword and/or armour) and i've talked to everyone i can find in the town. i already swam around for coins, listened for one, and worked in the tavern. i can't buy the horse. drat. and i've figured out what to do with the kitchen, but i haven't heard about the ring yet to get the items to switch the portraits.

hint please!!
