> How big is a six-year-old supposed to be? My grandson who turned six recently is 72 pounds. He is not fat. He is just big, and I wonder if he is *too* big. He is three pounds heavier than his nine-year-old sister, but she is taller. Both are strong, healthy, and athletic. I can't remember any of my own kids being that big at six. How big are 21st century kids?

Humans get taller with every passing generation, and consequently heavier even if they're not fat.

If your grandson is not fat, but strong, healthy and athletic, I wouldn't worry. Being athletic has probably given him a fair amount of bone and muscle, both of which pack on the pounds in a smaller package than fat. It's not healthy to tinker with a child's weight or metabolism, except in extreme cases.

Just make sure he stays athletic. That can only do him good. He'll grow up with a nice sturdy frame, and people will respect him more without knowing why.
