There doesn't seem to be one, except for buying it and then selling it if you don't want it. One thing you can do, is to make sure that the character you're buying it for is the one doing the buying (in other words, click the "Buy Items" button in that character's row). Items that that particular character can't use will be gray.

You could also post a message in this forum asking about the item you're thinking about buying.
